Our morning lecture was “Japanese-U.S. Relations” by Professor Thomas Fingar. About 10 am, we left the ship and walked across the street to a local market (Hakodate Morning Market – 5 am to noon) which features fresh seafood and other local specialties. It’s about four city blocks square. Some people then took a cable car up Mount Hakodate for (supposedly) panoramic views over the city and port. Because it was overcast, Tom and I bypassed the trip up the mountain. Those who went said they could see about a 90-degree view.
At 1 pm, we had lunch on board as we set sail again for Otaru (217 nautical miles). Because we had to have our bags packed and outside the room by 7 am, most of us took the afternoon to pack. Before dinner, we had a wrap-up panel discussion with Professors Alide Cagidemetrio, Michelle Damian, Thomas Fingar, and Werner Sollors. It was extremely informative.
Dinner was our farewell dinner in the dining room where the staff came through to sing and say goodbye. This was the end of the main tour and cruise.
